FAQs
About Our Teak Cutting Boards
What makes teak a good wood for cutting boards?
Teak is one of the densest, most oil-rich hardwoods available. Its natural silica content resists moisture, bacteria, and warping without any chemical treatment. On the Janka hardness scale, teak sits hard enough to shrug off everyday knife marks but soft enough not to dull blades. Most woods look worn after a few years of heavy use. Teak looks better.
Is teak safe for food preparation?
Yes. Teak's natural oils create an inhospitable surface for bacteria. All Wooden Decor boards are finished with food-safe WOCA oil from Denmark and arrive ready to use. No treatment is needed before first use.
What is the difference between end grain and edge grain cutting boards?
End grain boards expose the cross-section of the wood fibres. Knife cuts close back up as the fibres flex -- the board is self-healing. Serious prep cooks prefer them.
Edge grain boards show the long grain pattern. They run slightly thinner, lighter, and more affordable while remaining exceptionally durable.
Will my cutting board warp?
Teak warps far less than other hardwoods because of its oil content and dense grain. Hand-wash it, dry it upright immediately, and store it off wet surfaces -- warping is unlikely. Leaving any wooden board to soak is a reliable way to damage it.
Do your boards come pre-oiled?
Every board ships finished with WOCA premium oil. It arrives ready for your kitchen.
Care and Maintenance
How do I clean my teak cutting board?
Hand-wash with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly, then dry upright immediately. Never lay it flat while wet or leave it in a sink. No dishwasher.
How often should I oil my cutting board?
Two to three times per year, or whenever the surface looks dry or lighter in color. Apply food-grade mineral oil, let it soak at least 30 minutes (overnight is better), then wipe off the excess.
Can I put my cutting board in the dishwasher?
No. Prolonged heat and moisture will warp, crack, and degrade any wooden board regardless of quality. Hand-wash only.
How do I remove odors or stains?
For odors: rub coarse salt and the cut side of a lemon across the surface, let it sit a few minutes, then rinse and dry. For stains: lightly sand with fine-grit paper and apply a fresh coat of mineral oil. Teak is naturally stain-resistant, so heavy staining is uncommon with regular care.
